Webtoon and storyboard software on the Mac
How Velika approaches webtoon pages, storyboards, and sequential projects on macOS—what the preview can do now, and which comic-production tools still belong in Clip Studio Paint.
Updated 2026-09-13
Short answer: If you need a finished webtoon or storyboard pipeline today, Clip Studio Paint and specialized storyboard tools are more complete. Velika is a free macOS painting preview whose product direction is one project for pages, shots, characters, and revisions. Treat vertical-scroll publishing, balloon tools, and shot libraries as roadmap unless a release notes them as shipped.
Sequential work is more than a tall canvas
Webtoons need readable slices, consistent characters, speech, and export presets. Storyboards need shots, dialogue, continuity, and revision marks. General drawing apps can paint a frame; production still fails when the next frame forgets the costume, the lens, or the page number.
Velika’s public thesis is that those objects belong beside the canvas. That is why the site talks about Project Memory, comics, animation, and storyboards together. The preview you download is still the painting foundation.
What you can practice now
- draw key frames and page thumbnails with professional brushes
- keep studies editable instead of flattening too early
- store local files without an account
- evaluate whether a quieter canvas helps long sessions
What you should not expect from the current preview
- a claim of Clip Studio–level webtoon panel, balloon, and publish tools
- a finished animatic or editorial storyboard suite
- a phone app for drawing on the commute
- Windows or Linux installs
Those items stay on the comparison and research notes until a build demonstrates them.
Choosing a stack
| Job | Practical choice today |
|---|---|
| Serialized webtoon with balloons and platform export | Clip Studio Paint |
| Agency storyboards tied to editorial templates | Dedicated storyboard tools or Photoshop/CSP hybrids |
| Painted frames and animatic sketches on a Mac, no login | Velika preview |
| Free cross-platform painting and animation | Krita |
| Client stills, comps, and PSD delivery | Photoshop |
Mixing tools is normal. Many artists already sketch in one app and letter in another. Velika is trying to shrink that split over time, not deny that the split exists.

Frequently asked questions
Does Velika support webtoon vertical canvas presets?
Do not treat marketing language as a shipped preset list. Check the features and download pages for the current build. Long-form page structure is a stated direction.
Can I storyboard and animate in the same file?
Onion-skin animation foundations are part of the painting studio. A full production timeline that replaces specialized storyboard software is not a current claim.
Is there a mobile webtoon app?
Not from Velika yet. Touch-first layouts are a release requirement for any future phone build.
Where should I start if I only have a Mac and want to try sequential drawing?
Download the macOS preview, keep Clip Studio Paint or Krita for publishing, and read the Clip Studio comparison before moving any serialized title.
