Free drawing software for Mac
Velika is a free macOS drawing app for comics, illustration, and animation. No account is required for core painting. Windows and Linux builds are still planned.
Updated 2026-09-13
Short answer: Velika is free drawing software for Mac in community preview. You can paint, keep layers editable, and save local projects without creating an account. It is not a full Adobe or Clip Studio suite, and it does not run on Windows or Linux yet.
What “free” means here
Free applies to the core local painting loop:
- open the app and draw
- use professional brushes and layers
- save and reopen projects on the machine
- work offline for that core loop
It does not mean every future service will be free. Optional connected features may carry separate limits or plans. The public site will describe those at the point they exist.
Why Mac-specific software still matters
Many “free drawing app” lists mix iPad, iPhone, and desktop tools. Velika’s current preview is a native macOS desktop application aimed at pen displays and tablet-on-desk setups. If you need iPad or Windows today, use a tool that already ships there. Krita covers Windows, macOS, and Linux; Clip Studio Paint and Photoshop cover several desktop and mobile options.
What you can do in the preview
Velika is built for complete visual projects, even while some project tools are still landing:
- illustration: sketch, ink, paint, and composite on a responsive canvas
- comics: keep sequential work in view as page tools mature
- animation: onion-skin foundations for frame-by-frame drawing
- storyboards: treat shots and pages as part of one project model
The honest split is this: painting, layers, pen input, and local files are the preview foundation. Connected pages, pose studios, and cross-device interfaces are direction until a build proves them.
Limits to know before you download
- Preview software changes quickly. Keep backups of important files.
- File interchange with PSD and other layered formats is a compatibility strategy. Test copies of production files before you migrate.
- There is no published Windows or Linux installer.
- Phone support is not available. A future small-screen app must be designed for touch, not scaled down from the desktop UI.
How Velika compares on price and login
| Product | Core access on desktop | Account to draw |
|---|---|---|
| Velika preview | Free on macOS | Not required |
| Krita | Free and open source on major desktops | Not required |
| Clip Studio Paint | Perpetual editions and plans | Product/account paths vary by license |
| Adobe Photoshop | Subscription | Membership activation required |
Krita already proves that professional painting can be free. Velika is not “the free one” as a unique claim. Its bet is a calmer default and a project layer for characters, pages, and revisions.

Frequently asked questions
Is Velika really free for Mac?
Yes. The core painting workflow in the macOS community preview is free.
Do I need an Apple Pencil or a specific tablet?
Velika is designed for pressure-sensitive pens and pen displays. Check the current preview notes for the build you install; this page does not invent a hardware certification list.
Can I use it fully offline?
Local drawing, layers, brushes, and saving are intended to work without a network. Nothing is uploaded merely because you opened a canvas.
When will Windows and Linux versions ship?
When the download page says they are available. Unpublished dates are not product facts.
Is this a trial that expires?
The public positioning is that the painting loop is the product, not a timed demo. Preview builds may still be limited by platform and feature completeness.
